At Industrial Paper Products, Inc.,
we always care about the concerns of our customers and how these issues affect
their businesses and impact the surrounding community. In recent weeks,
local and national news have drawn awareness to the unprecedented outbreaks of
MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) outside of
hospital/healthcare settings, called community associated, or CA-MRSA.
This jump in reported cases has caused concern over the spread of the so-called
“superbug” and potential health impact. As a manager responsible for the
cleaning of a school facility, health club, public facility or other
potentially susceptible areas, it is always important to differentiate fact
from fiction. To control cross-contamination on environmental surfaces
and minimize all strains of MRSA (and other pathogenic organisms) spread by
bodily contact, it is vital to follow proper guidelines for the correct use of
the disinfectants with a MRSA efficacy (prevention) claim. In addition,
pro-actively promoting correct hygiene practices in the facility is a huge step
in controlling outbreaks. Industrial Paper Products’ sales professionals
are ready to educate, equip and support your organization with the necessary
information to address your concerns and provide products to reduce the MRSA risk
to anyone subject to potential exposure.
What is the difference between CA-MRSA and HA-MRSA?
In simple terms, HA-MRSA
(healthcare associated) and CA-MRSA (community associated) strains are
genetically different organisms. While this is an important fact for
those infected or who could potentially become infected, there is no
differentiation when it comes to providing efficacy on an environmental
surface. Industrial Paper Products
specializes in several EPA-registered disinfectant cleaners that claim efficacy
for MRSA and are universally suitable for MRSA, HA-MRSA and CA-MRSA on hard,
inanimate environmental surfaces. “There are at least three different S.aureus strains in the United States that can cause CA-MRSA
infections. The Center for Disease Control continues to work with state and
local health departments to gather organisms and epidemiologic data from known
cases to determine why certain groups of people get these infections.”1
